D146 expects balanced budget

The words “Congratulations! You have a balanced budget” greeted Community Consolidated School District 146 school board
members on the first page the tentative 2010-2011 school budget. “Things are actually a little better than I was fearing they would be, so that is good news,” said School Board President Dean Casper. “ This is something this district has
been doing for the last 15 or so years is being fiscally frugal. And it’s paying off now.” Despite expectations for less funding from the federal government and

The apparent lowest bid for a new train station at the 80th Avenue Metra stop came in at \$8.1 million, about \$1 million below the village’s estimate of \$9.2 million for the base bid. Mike Bettenhausen, trustee and chairman of the Finance and Economic Development Committee, said the sluggish economy caused contractors to submitted very competitive prices for the large-scale project. “Certainly the fact that the bids came in so low is a direct reflection of the competitiveness of the job and the economy,” he said. “Projects similar to this and this dollar amount are very few and far between. There are some big companies out there that are probably willing to make concessions and minimize their overhead and profit just to keep their employees working.” Nine contractors submitted qualifying bids after 26 attended a pre-bid meeting on the project earlier this month, said Village Manager Scott Niehaus.
