Master Plan Revisions Approved; Pinelands Commission Is Final Hurdle
Changes Make It More Difficult To Build On Wetlands, Would Open Some Pinelands To Building
By Eric San Juan The master plan, the document that outlines the how, where and what when it comes to developing Jackson’s 100 square miles of land, will soon undergo some changes now that the council has unanimously passed nine ordinances impacting the document. The changes approved on Tuesday mark the culmination of nearly three years of planning for the next batch of updates. According to township officials, they also represent the first comprehensive overhaul of the document in over two decades. “The master plan is basically the development plan for the township. It designates commercial areas, residential areas, industrial areas and recreation areas,” said Todd Porter, Planning and Zoning Board Chairman. “The last time the map was redone was around the late ‘80s – ‘88 or ‘87.” Of the nine separate ordinances and the changes they are slated to make, the addition of a section entitled the Conservation Zone Overlay was cited by Porter as the one with the most potential to make a difference. The new section essentially takes portions of land that the state has deemed “unbuildable” like wetlands, waterways and buffers and specifically marks those sections as untouchable on the master

Milko is a member of the Jackson Memorial, FBLA (Future Businesses Leaders of America). By Joseph Kienzlen The holidays are just around the corner. People are beginning to make their way through the malls and planning holiday get-togethers with family and friends (many of which will include lots of food). It’s supposed to be a wonderful time of the year. But for many, the next couple months will be a struggle – yet with the assistance of a dedicated group of volunteers and a community with the spirit of giving, many in Jackson will, at the very least, enjoy the traditional holiday menu. It’s been over 20 years since the Jackson Women of Today (JWOT) began distributing food baskets for the holidays, which eventually evolved into the Jackson Food Pantry. They never imagined that it would grow to be the organization’s largest and longest running program, even receiving national recognition. Last week, the members of the JWOT began their latest holiday food drive as part of this year’s Make a Difference Day. The day began with an outpouring of help from a number of organizations and student volunteers from Jackson Memorial and Jackson Liberty High schools, according to Food Pantry Director Donna Sauers. “One of the highlights of the day was a large donation of food from three students (Tanner Kelly, Ryan Van Wickle and Kyle Lona),” Sauers said. “The boys spent three weeks collecting food from their neighbors and then generously donated the 51 bags to the food pantry.
